 Croatian foreign policy: priorities, challenges, and trajectories. 
 
Predavac:  Marijan Gubic, Minister, Croatian embassy to Washington, DC.


Minister Gubic spoke to a small audience at University of Toronto's Faculty Club about the benefits and the cost of Croatia joining NATO and Croatia's prospects of joining the EU. 

In summary:
NATO
  • Croatia will not need to maintain a large military.
  • Croatia will eliminate conscription.
  • The initial cost of joining NATO will be 1.6% of Croatia's annual GDP.
  • In the future, Croatia will have to spend 2% of its annual GDP on NATO activities.
  • Croatia will be required to go to the rescue of any NATO member being invaded.
  • Croatia will be able to refuse or limit troop deployment on any other NATO mission.
  • Croatia has been maintaining about 200 troops in Afghanistan on a rotating basis and our troops have all come home alive.
European Union
  • Croatia will likely be the 28th country to join the EU.
  • Public support in Croatia increasingly supports joining the EU

Abstract:
The primary contours of Croatian foreign policy by addressing the key dimensions of political, economic, and security challenges. Croatia faces integration opportunities in EuroAtlantic institutions, namely the European Union and NATO. The paper also addresses the trajectory of Croatia's foreign policy and the impact on it's international reputation and conditions at home.

About the Speaker
Marijan Gubic, is the Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) with the rank of Minister at the Embassy of Croatia to the United States. He has previously held positions in communications and marketing with the World Bank and PricewaterhouseCoopers. He has also served as assistant presidential adviser for international public affairs. Mr. Gubic holds degrees in laws, political science, and a masters in international affairs from Monash University, Melbourne Australia.
